Learning opportunities
at the Blake Museum
Symposium on Bridgwater Fair for Teachers - 2nd February 2012
The Learning Team at Blake Museum
aim to provide an opportunity
for adults and children to investigate and develop their knowledge of the history of
Bridgwater and the surrounding area, consider how this may have shaped
the locality as it is today. and the part Bridgwater played in world history.
The team of volunteers is happy to work with individuals, schools, groups of young people
and adult social groups, to provide a taylor-made experience focusing on the interests
of the group.
These visits can be arranged normally on Mondays, evenings
and at other times by arrangement. Responsibility for the care of individuals remains with the leaders of the group at all times.
The Learning Team is supported by experts who have
knowledge in many areas, for example local industry, archaeology, buildings,
and conflicts.
Liasion with local schools has been developed through an annual Symposium, based upon the National Gallery's Take One Picture project.
Local school teachers attend a one day symposium in January or February. Through examining a picture, they work collaboratively in planning
a cross-curricular project for their own school using
a variety of visual, auditory and kinesthetic activities.
Projects so far have been based on a painting of The Irene, the last sailing ship built in Bridgwater,
and a picture of Bridgwater Castle.
As a follow-up, the schools can provide items to create a display at the museum.
Demonstrating the variety of learning opportunities provided by The Blake Museum, Somerset Skills
and Learning and the Blake Museum Learning Team have recently worked together on a four week art course,
combining a knowledge of portraiture, based on examples in the Museum, with learning how to paint a portrait.
Further courses are planned for the future.
Members of the Learning Team are available to discuss and plan visits as required.
